How do I install and operate the espressoDECK?

This series of 3 videos cover the unbox steps and how to install and start up the espressoDECK.

Can you guide me through the cleaning process?

For instructions on group rinsing, portafilter cleaning, steamers, and general cleaning, please refer to pages 10 to 11 of the user manual. Click here to access.

WARNING THE GROUP HEADS AND STEAM TAPS ARE EXTREMELY HOT. CAUTION MUST BE TAKEN WHEN OPERATING AND CLEANING

espressoDECK exterior: Water and a microfiber cloth. No need for additional chemicals.

CHEMICAL CLEAN (Backflush)

  1. In a commercial environment, this should be done at the end of each day.
  2. Start by performing the group rinse.
  3. After the group rinse process, put half a teaspoon of espresso machine cleaning powder (provided with the machine) into the group handle containing the blind cleaning filter.
  4. Lock the handle firmly into the group head and activate the group for three to five seconds before turning it off again. The pressure build-up will be released to waste after you have switched the group off (this is normal).
  5. Repeat this last step two more times and then allow to sit for about three minutes. The cleaning powder has been mixed with water, and the backpressure has flushed the cleaning chemical back through the shower screen and electronic valve.
  6. After being allowed to soak for three minutes, activate the group for 3 to 5 seconds, then turn it off. Repeat this step six times.
  7. Remove the group handle and activate the group allowing the residual chemical to be flushed out.
  8. Perform the group rinse with just freshwater six times to ensure no chemical is left in the group.

NOTE: It is advised to discard the first coffee after the chemical cleaning has been performed. Never leave the cleaning powder in the group head for an extended time (i.e. overnight) as it can dry up and seize your electronic valve causing it not to work. Always finish with a freshwater rinse.

Store the espresso cleaning power with the lid tightly closed when not in use, and avoid getting the handles of the portafilters wet during cleaning.

Topic list: Coffee Making

What type of coffee beans does the espressoDECK support?

The espressoDECK supports any coffee beans roasted for espresso extraction. Noting the importance of having quality, fresh beans as well as a well-tuned coffee grinder.

Are there specific instructions for brewing?

Coffee roasters, baristas, establishment owners, and various trends around the world are out there and will assist with brewing different types of blends. However, here is a quick guide!

Espresso Grind: The grind of the coffee is crucial for making espresso. If the grind is too fine, the coffee will flow very slowly and may over-extract. If it’s too coarse, water will pass through too quickly.

Grinder Adjustment: Calibrating the grinder to control the speed at which water flows through the coffee is essential for achieving the perfect espresso.

Amount of Coffee: The quantity of coffee used also affects the speed of the brewing process. Grinders often have pre-set amounts programmed to ensure consistency in the volume of coffee produced.

Checking the Puck: After brewing, it’s important to check the coffee puck. A firm, dry puck indicates the right grind and extraction, while a sloppy and wet puck suggests that the grind might be too fine.

Portafilters for Different Amounts: Different portafilters are required depending on whether you’re making one coffee or two. The single portafilter is for 7 to 11 grams of coffee, while the double portafilter is for double the amount, ranging from 14 to 21 grams.

Does the espressoDECK have a pre-infusion feature?

The E61 is a very forgiving group head, so you probably won’t need to use this feature however, there are some blends that prefer a longer hang time before full extractions.

However, the espressoDECK does have the electronic Pre-infusion feature should your particular blend require more of a hang time to wet the coffee.

Pre-infusion is a feature in espresso machines that involves gently soaking the coffee grounds with a small amount of hot water before the full brewing process begins.

What to be careful of: Shot volumes will vary with this feature on or off. With the feature on the relays work harder, and all moving parts technically move twice as much, so there is more wear to the machine.

How to turn on and off:

Can I adjust the water temperature for brewing?

The espressoDECKs are shipped with the boiler set to 1.1 bar of steam pressure, providing a temperature range of 88 to 92°C at the group head, which is the industry standard.

However, we understand the trends and various blends out there, playing with different temperatures. Check out this Instagram video with Jason’s instructions on how to adjust the boiler pressure to increase or decrease the pressure, which will, respectively, raise or lower the group head temperature. https://www.instagram.com/p/C2vG1EaS9M1/
